Summertime always seems to go by too fast, but there's still time and opportunity remaining to get the most out of the final stretch. And if you're planning one last trip before vacation ends, whether near or far, now is the perfect time to get your Subaru is ready for the voyage. Below, you'll find a checklist of some important pre-road-trip car care tips to consider before you embark. And if you need to address any of these items, a visit to Garcia Subaru North's service garage can help ensure comfort and peace of mind so that you can focus on enjoying the journey.
- Test the battery: If your battery is three years old or more, it's recommended to have it tested once or twice a year to avoid a surprise ignition failure.
- Top off/change the oil: The extra heat of summer can be hard on engine oil, causing it to break down faster than normal. And even if the oil is in good shape, it's good to check the levels before making a long trip.
- Check/replace wiper blades: Wiper blades will eventually deteriorate over time, becoming stiff and brittle. And heat can accelerate the process. While we don't get much rain here in Albuquerque, if you're going somewhere a little wetter, good wiper blades are a must.
- Test the AC: If the outside temperature is in the upper 80s or higher, your vehicle's AC temp needs to measure at least 40 degrees or lower at the vent (on maximum and recirculate settings) to be effective. Before you go, have the system tested and serviced, if necessary, to ensure you have a cool place to retreat to after enjoying the sun.
- Pay attention to your brakes: Unsettling sounds like squealing and grinding are obvious signs that something's up with your brakes. But there are other symptoms to be aware of as well. Visit Garcia Subaru North's service garage if you notice any of the following:
- Excessive steering wheel vibration
- Unusually stiff or spongy brake pedal feel
- ABS warning light illumination
- Pulling to one side
- Strong acrid or burning odor
- Check the tires: Inspect all tires for cuts, sidewall bulging, and proper tread depth. Many modern tires have "wear bars" at the bottom of the tread. When these bars are even with the tread, the tires are unsafe and should be changed as soon as possible. Another way to check the tread is to insert a quarter headfirst into the tread at multiple points around the tire. If the tread doesn't cover the top of Washington's head, the tire is no longer safe.
